The saga of Disney’s The Lion King is set in motion in a fictional region of the African savanna; set in The Pride Lands, the little heir Simba is destined to succeed as King, before disloyalty is revealed because of the deeds of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his desire to take the throne and become ruler himself. The first half's course of events leads to Simba's exile from his home and the account of his ultimate journey back to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.
The musical, since its creation, had to borrow several design elements and inspiration from real African culture and history given the play's setting. The plot itself is actually founded on previously existing African heroes and real events – Simba being the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was appropriately called The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to gain a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, especially design, which resulted in a faultless Broadway production of the musical. The costumes when seen are perfect representations of several ethnic tribes in Africa, an example of such is Simba’s costume in the musical which is actually based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' attire. Just like the late 1994 film, the remarkable musical score penned by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African roots, with the stage adaptation even putting in numbers with lyrics that are sung either partially or completely in African tongue such as Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African theme is also evident in choreography, with many of the numbers consistently featuring the fluidity of Bali-inspired dance.
The regalia, African influence, and superb acting all work in harmony to deliver an magnificent musical. On Saturday 13th September 2025 and at Vancouver, the acclaimed Lion King is hosted in Queen Elizabeth Theatre - loved dearly by locals and foreigners for holding the best musicals and stage adaptations because of the unrivaled amenities and topnotch sound system that entertainment venues can provide.
