Set in the artistic period during the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The show is set in and is focused on retelling the events of true-to-life nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, called the Moulin Rouge, where the patrons come for unadulterated fun. By the late 1900s, the Moulin Rouge nightclub became well-known for its French Cabaret elegance – vibrant, full of spirit, and pure party entertainment. This Parisian entertainment venue that the staging was inspired by also affected the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's creative team stating that they did take parts of the actual French time period, and it can assuredly be seen in the production. The set, costume design, classical renditions, and actual performances (which sees a lot of can-can dance) all clearly pay homage to to the 2001 adaptation of Moulin Rouge.
It is in this time of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of France's La Belle Époque, a time considered to be the peak of beauty and spreading artistry, where the forbidden affair of two lovers finally happens. Christian, an American writer who travels to Paris searching for a successful career, meets Satine, the top performer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite the imminent danger of their relationship, fall deeply in love and are forced into a hidden affair with each other due to their uncontrollable feelings.
Depending on perspective, the time of La Belle Époque was denounced by even locals not as a time period of cultural and artistic development. Some people believe that this time period were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. the Broadway musical, however, chose to present the time period in a more endearing light by focusing on the hopeful Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as seen through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the play.
This January, theatre fans have the chance to be part of the entertainment most likely also enjoyed by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be produced at an equally vibrant and amazing venue, Queen Elizabeth Theatre. With interior decor just as sprightly as the set design that it is holding, Queen Elizabeth Theatre is the ideal fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited showing on Thursday 22nd January 2026.
