The Lion King at Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Ranked currently as the third of Broadway’s longest-running shows of all time, Disney’s The Lion King has cemented its position in global history with several productions that have reached not just many cities in the U.S., but also Europe, Canada, and Asia among others. On September, it adds one other to its toured cities as Disney's The Lion King will be touring in Queen Elizabeth Theatre at Vancouver on Friday 12th September 2025!

The Lion King, since its first production and transfer to the theater stage in 1997, has undoubtedly continued to be one of the top Broadway musicals. With a classic story brought to life on stage with the unique introduction of life-sized animal puppets and an African-inspired musical score and performance numbers, the musical was referred to as an epic show to both lovers of the 1994 motion picture and completely brand new audiences.

Leveling up from an already riveting production, the musical is also without a doubt one of the most applauded shows in each award season the musical was included in. In 1998 alone after its debut, Disney's The Lion King was nominated for over 20 awards, garnering 6 Tony awards in that year alone including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (by Richard Hudson), Best Choreography (by Garth Fagan), Best Lighting Design (by Donald Holder), Best Direction of a Musical and Best Costume Design (by Julie Taymor). The award conferred for Best Direction of a Musical is considered major, as Julie Taymor is the first woman to ever receive the award.

Over the next two decades, the Broadway hit continued to take all the awards and commendations with more than over 70 major arts awards and nominations received. In the musical's multiple tours and productions in several countries, it has been awarded by a lot of organizations including but not limited to the NY Drama Critics Circle, The Grammys, the Laurence Olivier Awards, the Molière Awards, and the Helpmann Awards.
