A revival of one of the world’s most adored operas doesn’t happen every day, and when the opportunity comes, you grab it with both hands. No questions asked; no ifs or buts; you do what you have to do, get some tickets and you go.
Renowned Italian composer Giacomo Puccini’s tragic tale of love and poverty in four acts lies at the heart of standard operatic repertoire around the globe, and since its premiere in 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Piedmont, Italy, it has been revived and adapted countless times - from exact replicas of the original to literary works, from Jonathan Larson’s much adored musical Rent to Baz Luhrmann’s jukebox musical Moulin Rouge!.
Few operas delve as deep as La Bohème. It is a masterful work that conveys the intimacy and grandeur of Puccini’s timeless score alongside the hair-raising tale about four young Bohemians living in poverty, but who discover the true meaning of love, as captured in Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa’s Italian libretto, inspired by Scènes de la vie de bohème as written in 1851 by Henri Murger. From the breathtaking scenery to the incredible theatricality, from the heartwrenching emotion to the rich voices, from the wonderful attention to detail to the bittersweet nature of the gorgeous score - this year’s production of La Bohème promises to enchant, dazzles, and captivates like never before!
The Vancouver Opera’s production of La Bohème will be headed up by a powerhouse team comprising conductor Jonathan Darlington and director Brenna Corner, and will feature the impeccable talents of Jonelle Sills and Lucia Cesaroni alternating as Mimi, Gregory Dahl as Marcello, Lara Ciekiewicz as Musetta, Alex Halliday as Colline, Justin Welsh as Shaunard, and Thomas Goerz as Benoit and Alcindoro.
