SYNOPSIS

After an enchantress disguised as an old beggar woman curses a handsome young prince by turning him into a terrifying beast and his household staff into household items due to his selfishness and judgement of outer appearances, he is handed an enchanted rose: only once he has felt true love and being loved in return, will the curse be broken – but only before the last petal falls.

In a nearby town, book-loving, dreamy beauty Belle is trying to avoid the advances of the town’s most sought-after, yet chauvinistic bachelor Gaston. Her dreams of adventure beyond the old provincial town are massive, but her love for her inventor father Maurice is much bigger. When Maurice is imprisoned by the Beast for trespassing after getting lost in the woods, Belle sacrifices her freedom for that of her father. While in captivity at the Beast’s castle, the household staff encourages the Beast to rather treat Belle as a guest, seeing the potential of the curse being broken if Belle could only fall in love with the Beast. Even though this seems nearly impossible, Belle forms a rather special bond with the Beast, who is slowly learning to be kind, and is falling in love with Belle.

Back in town, Maurice attempts to find help to save Belle from the Beast, leading to an uprising with Gaston at the helm. The questions are: will Gaston be victorious; will Belle fall in love with the Beast before the last petal falls; and will the curse ever be broken?

Beauty and the Beast is a Broadway force oozing with that old-school storybook charm, wonderful storytelling, incredible visuals, and a stunning spectacle – a total must-see for young and old!

HISTORY & LEGACY

When the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast written by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont was first published in 1740, the story captivated like no other. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 1991 animated film was hailed as a fine musical that resonates, enthralls, and mesmerizes young and old, possessing all the qualities for a triumphant on stage. The writing was on the wall: Beauty and the Beast simply needed to be adapted for stage.

To add to the already well-known and much-adored musical numbers, original songwriter Alan Menken composed additional material alongside lyricist Tim Rice, Josiah Hall wrote a magnificent book, and the journey to Broadway started.

The stage adaptation of Beauty and the Beast premiered in 1993 at the Music Hall in Houston, and officially opened at the Palace Theatre on Broadway in April 1994. From there, it transferred to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it ran for 5,461 performances, becoming the eleventh-longest running production in Broadway history. Today, countless theatre companies, schools, and community theatres around the globe have performed the musical with great success, and to much critical acclaim.

To date, Beauty and the Beast has received a Tony Award for Best Costume Design and a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical, among plenty of nominations, including Tony Award nominations for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score
