It has been a decade since Vancouver Opera brought Carmen to the venue, and the show has blown away its audience with an incredible cast and breathtaking scenery! Carmen and Don Jose’s love story will be brought to life once again. This time, the production is done by the illustrious Vancouver Opera, which has an impressive reputation for bringing historic masterpieces like Carmen to the music-loving folks of Vancouver. They will be creating their own rendition but also staying true to the original works of legendary composer Georges Bizet with libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy.
The last time that Vancouver Opera performed Carmen at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre it was in 2014. That production was met with rave reviews from fans and critics. And a highly awaited revival has been long overdue. This 2024, Vancouver Opera will pull out all the stops. This opera will feature an all-star cast, including the incredibly talented mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy, Carolyn Sproule, Aol Kumar, Matthew White, and the awaited debut of baritone singer Nathan Keoughan. Aside from its amazing stars, the production also features a great group of people behind the scenes. The distinguished director Rachel Peake will bring this amazing story to life with the accompaniment of the grand symphony led by esteemed conductor Les Dala.
Attendees can look forward to the fantastic works of compers Bizet, whose masterpieces like “Habanera” and “Toreador Song” left an incredible mark in the opera world. The original production of Carmen premiered in 1875, and now it has become one of the most popular and most frequently produced operas in the world. Divided into four acts, the opera tells the story of a beautiful and fiery gypsy named Carmen who seduces a naive soldier named Don Jose.
